To figure it out, you’ll need the following information:
- 1. The number of hours you worked during your last pay period—not how much you’re being paid for, but how much time you actually spent doing your job. That includes your commute, the work you do from home, everything.
- 2. Your after-tas pay for that pay period—that’s your gross earnings minus the tax that was withheld.
- Divide #2 by #1
That’s how much you make an hour.
And if you’re honest, it’s probably much less than you think.
Now take your after-tax earnings and divide them by 40 (the number of hours “full-time” work is supposed to be for one week) or 80 (for two weeks).
That’s the amount per hour your employer tells you you are earning.
It’s a misrepresentation of what they should be paying you.
Don’t believe me?
Multiply the amount your employer says you’re earning per hour by the number of hours you are actually working.
That’s how much you should be earning.
The difference is your gift to your employer.
Every other piece worker clocks in and clocks out.
Nurses, autoworkers, mechanics.
Not clinicians. We cost too much and our psychological make-up is vulnerable to manipulation.
And we’re not protected by a union.
In the end, however, the responsibility for being exploited belongs to each of us.
As Dear Abby once said:
“If you’re going to tattoo the word ‘Welcome’ on your forehead, people are going to wipe their feet on you.”
Earn what you work for.
